I don't get the big white box on the Kipling cover at all - maybe it's more convincing on the actual, physical book, but from the scan it looks really jarring - as if they've just left that bit blank, assuming someone's gonna fill it in later..?
The big white box is part of the series (Modern Library) look -- it works better when the book in question has more than three letters in its title, though.

I'm always disappointed when i see a book has a stock duplicate (presumably cheap or copyright free) image on the cover.
It makes me think that the book can't be that original or refreshing.
