Tove Follow-Up

Just a quick addendum to yesterday's Tove Jansson post: here's that edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland which she illustrated.

And here are some of the other interior illustrations:

These images were taken from this wonderful (but possibly copyright-defying) site, which has all of the interior illustrations online. It also shows Tove's illustrations for a number of other books, including these great ones from Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Wow. Those are incredible, especially considering what strong images we already have associated with those books in our minds. To be able to give Alice and The Hobbit a new and interesting twists is a remarkable accomplishment. I love the hints of Gorey in the Tolkien illustrations--or is it possible that I'm tracing the lines of influence backwards?

Good question--there are definitely some common elements, but then 'The Hobbit' illustrations are originally from 1962. Perhaps it's whatever you would call the artistic equivalent of convergent evolution.
