On Your Bike

A play I just read, Penelope Skinner's The Village Bike, is about a sexually frustrated pregnant woman who buys a bicycle and then gets involved in an affair with the bike's previous owner. It has a really clever, witty and rude cover by artist Jurgen Ziewe.

When I first read your title, my mind went immediately to "the bicycle Heathcliff used on his trips through the moors."

You'll understand and forgive me, I hope.

Ha, yes, of course--if you'll forgive me for introducing that image into your head in the first place!

Awesome cover.

Story sounds interesting, too. I don't usually read plays, but every now & then one sounds too good to miss...

Every now and then I go on a bit of play binge--the ones I want to see never seem to be performed in this part of the world, so I almost always read them rather than see them.

Such restraint!

Maybe this is so obvious that you didn't think it worth mentioning; or maybe it's a specifically English idiom, but 'the village bike' means a promiscuous woman (i.e. everyone's had a ride).

@Jonathan Walker Well I'm happy you mentioned that, because I didn't know. It's basically the opposite of the village dyke! Oh ho ho I'm so inappropriately clever this morning...
