Given production lag-times, it seems impossible for the record sleeve to be a copy of the book cover: just a weird coincidence.

I'd say it was the other way round. There's a post on The Casual Optimist where Clare Skeats, designer of Somebody to Love, talks about her "adaptation" of the album cover...
