Another set of Penguin Hardback Modern Classics, following on from these lovely Fitzgeralds, is this forthcoming set of five Virginia Woolfs. Designer and artist as yet unknown. I assume the artwork will wrap all the way around the back and onto the flaps. Click to embiggen.
I adore this kind of abstraction on cover. Especially on classic work. We don't need to always make the cover "try" so hard to tell us about the book. Sometimes it just needs to look pleasant to have lying around the house on tabletops and shelves.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point: I assume most people buying a copy of a Woolf already know they want it--they don't need a blurb and a representative photo to clinch the sale.
ReplyDeleteOoh, rather nice. Should the plural be Virginia Woolves?
ReplyDeleteChrist, these are amazing! I think I'll have to get all five to replace my yellowing 70's softcovers. And I agree with Ian, these covers let the words in the book to the talking.
ReplyDeleteDaniel, I'm sorely tempted to do the same.
ReplyDeleteMPK--perhaps a pack of Woolves?
Very late in the day here, but I think these are by Angus Hyland at Pentagram.
ReplyDeleteHope you're well James! :-)
Thank you, Dan! I'll add that info to the post.
