These first two covers, both for forthcoming books, are the latest in a long line of book covers that definitely do not feature large images of vaginas.
These other covers also do not feature or suggest vaginas in any way.
UPDATE: The splendid Marly Youmans has found a much earlier example of this, from 1975.
Sensational! But in no way titillating, of course, because: no vaginas. At all.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the early-morning wakeup.
One of my very favourite books that doesn't have a graphic picture of a vagina on the cover is this one.
ReplyDeleteBut if I had to name my favourite book of all that doesn't feature a diagram of two vaginas rubbing together, I'd probably choose this.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks, DLM. And Gareth, your completely non-genital contributions are appreciated!
ReplyDeleteYou probably already know this but that last one really is a vagina. Megumi Igarishi's vagina (well, really her vulva) to be exact. She made those toys and even a vagina kayak as a way to protest Japan's laws in regards to vaginas.

Cheers, yes: I remember seeing a story about the kayak a while ago, which was my first introduction to her unique output.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe I never clocked the Tipping The Velvet one!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly is more obvious in the sort of company posted here!
ReplyDeleteI point you to the first edition of Rosemary Daniell's "A Sexual Tour of the Deep South." Poetry collection maybe from the 70's or 80's? Digging deep in my mind. The jacket in three shades of pink and coral. But it belongs on this list.
ReplyDeleteExcellent! I have added that to the post. Thanks you!
ReplyDeleteHere's a belated glad-you-liked-it! I think that cover stuck in my mind because such images were rarer back then. You know, there is a fully equipped boy Minotaur on the back of "Glimmerglass," if you ever decide (or maybe you did already?) to frolic in covers featuring the opposite sex! He's rather adorable...
